Resumo

| Durante muito tempo os estudos sobre mudança organizacional têm enfatizado a importância de intervenções orientadas à organização como um todo, desvalorizando ações locais enquanto geradoras de efeitos mais amplos. Um argumento similar tem sido usado pelos críticos das diversas tentativas recentes de alterar a natureza do processo de trabalbo industrial, para os quais ações locais estimulam um neo-fordismo simbólico. Este trabalho apresenta resultados de um conjunto de estudos sobre complexidade organizacional que sugerem uma interpretação alternativa e menos convencional sobre o papel desempenhado pela parte dentro do todo da organização.

| For some time the conventional viewpoint on organizational change has argued that change should always be considered at the level of the organization as a whole and that specific changes directed at parts of the organization tend not to have any lasting or broad effect. A similar point of view has been taken, for diferent reasons, by critics of recent attempts to alter the nature of work organization who have argued that local actions in the work experience and which are unaccompanied by wider change in class, capital or labour relations, merely produce a simbolic form of new-fordist work structuring. Using as a basis a series of studies in organizational complexity, a suggestion is made for an alternative and less conventional view of the role played by the part within the organizational whole.
