| Objetiva-se neste artigo desenvolver uma reflexão sobre as possibilidades de participação dos membros das universidades em sua gestão, tendo como vetores principais a questão estrutural e o envolvimento das pessoas, considerando a autogestão como forma limite de participação. Para tanto, elabora-se conceituação inicial sobre a autogestão, de maneira a esclarecer a linguagem utilizada. A seguir, procura-se mostrar algumas das características significativas da realidade universitária atual e, finalmente, especula-se sobre possibilidades e alternativas de autogestão nessas instituições.

| This paper aims at reflecting on the possibilities of participation of members of the universities in their management. The main components of this reflection is the structural question and the involvement of people, and it takes self-management as a limiting case of participation. In order to do that, it develops an initial notion of self-management, as a way of clarifying minimally the language used. It then tries to show a number of significant characteristics of the present university state of affairs; finally, it speculates on the possibilities of, and alternatives to self-management in those organizations.
